Imperium - Interactive Design

A website design about the critically acclaimed novel.

Imperium: A Fiction of the South Seas is a loosely non-fictional story about a man named August Engelhart, the founder of a cult-like following known as Cocovorism. The story follows his decent into the strange practice and the people he recruits. In this design, I was paired with two other designers to come up with a website and mobile website based on a book cover.
Objective: The client is looking to design a book website to inform his audience about his latest book, Imperium: A Fiction of the South Seas. Imperium is based on a true story of a man named August Engelhart who founded a cult like religion revolving around coconuts, or Cocovorism. The book is regarded as a complex piece so the website should summarize it.

Target Audience: The target audience should mainly consist of complex readers who take time in their reading. Middle-Aged or Mature adults with a large vocabulary and a high word tolerance for complex reading wold be most suited for this book.

Style Concept: The style choices for the website should reflect heavily on the cover selected. Light blue with an old-fashioned sketch design should have a major role in the creation. The Van de Graf Canon or  also known as  the “Secret Canon”, should be utilized to give it an almost book like appearance. Type choices should be the same as the ones used on the book cover.
The original book cover design is displayed here. It heavily features a light blue "Old-fashioned sketch" look for the illustrative elements and a strange choice in typography which adds to the intriguing story line.
The process for designing the website was suggested by a fellow designer to use the Van De Graf Canon or "Secret Canon" as it's also called. This was applied to the desktop site.
The style for the website was researched by myself, The original colors tended to fade into the tan background so it was necessary to darken up the colors a tiny bit. The typefaces used in the original covers were used in the creation of this site as well.
